Wounded police officer goes home

Philadelphia Police Edward Davies, who was critically wounded in a struggle with a gunman on Aug. 13, was released Wednesday from Temple University Hospital, officials said.

Philadelphia Police Edward Davies, who was critically wounded in a struggle with a gunman on Aug. 13, was released Wednesday from Temple University Hospital, officials said.

Davies, 41, had undergone multiple surgeries, including the removal of one of his kidneys, during the five weeks he was hospitalized.

Numerous officers on the force and members of the public donated blood in support of Davies, a six-year veteran assigned to North Philadelphia's 25th District.

The alleged shooter, Eric Torres, 31, is being held without bail on charges that include attempted murder and assault on a law enforcement officer. Police said he was driving a car packed with heroin when he was stopped and fled into a mini-mart in Feltonville, where he shot Davies in the abdomen during a confrontation with officers.

"Ed is a wonderful father and husband and a dedicated police officer who loves his job. We are heartened and strengthened by the actions of those who have come forward to donate blood," the Davies family said last month in a statement.
