Philly's Memorial Day weekend forecast: Rainy start; sunny finish

Memorial Day weekend is likely to kick off with a cool, rainy start in the Philadelphia area.

But by the time residents are enjoying picnics, parades and a work-free day on Monday, the weather should be sunny and closer to average temperatures.

The National Weather Service says rain is likely today as Philadelphians make their way out of town, with showers especially likely between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The high temperature is only expected to reach 65 degrees today -- 11 degrees below normal.

As the weather service says in a forecast discussion: "A cool, damp, dreary day is in store for much of the area today, which will feel more like late fall instead of late spring."

Temperatures are expected to drop into the 40s overnight for the next two days, according to the weather service. The overnight low typically doesn't dip below 50 on a regular basis after late April.

Saturday should see a high of 68 degrees, and just a 30 percent chance of rain. Showers are most likely to happen before noon, the weather service says.

Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny and breezy, with a high near 71 degrees.

And on Monday, Philadelphia-area residents can expect sunny skies with a high temperature of 76 degrees.

On the Jersey Shore, though, temperatures are expected to be much cooler -- forecasts for places like Atlantic City and Ocean City only predict highs in the mid-60s through Monday.

It's expected to be breezy, and the weather service says it will issue a gale watch for the Atlantic coastal waters on Saturday, due to the likelihood of gale-force gusts.

There's a moderate risk of dangerous rip currents -- one of the deadliest types of weather in New Jersey -- along the Jersey and Delaware coasts, the weather service says.
