THE CHURCH of Scientology was founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, based on his books Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and Scientology: A New Slant on Life.

Here are the basic tenets of Scientology, culled from the website www.scientology.org:

* Scientology is a religion that

offers a precise path leading to an understanding of one's true spiritual nature and one's relationship to self, family, groups, mankind, all life forms, the material universe, the spiritual universe and the Supreme Being.

* The ultimate goal of Scientology is true spiritual enlightenment and freedom for all.

* Hubbard discovered that the

mind has two distinct parts, analytical and reactive. Scientology techniques can effectively "erase" the contents of the reactive mind (called "engrams") and eliminate the ability of such recordings to affect a person without his conscious knowledge.

* One of the ways Sciento-

logists clear the reactive mind of engrams is by "auditing" - "the process of asking specifically worded questions designed to help you find and handle areas of distress." The auditor uses an electro-psychometer, or an e-meter, to measure electrical changes in people being asked questions, often intimate ones. The device has been likened to a lie detector.
