40 seals seen at the Shore in 8 days

About 40 seals have been spotted on Jersey Shore beaches over the last eight days, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, N.J., reported Thursday.

About 40 seals have been spotted on Jersey Shore beaches over the last eight days, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, N.J., reported Thursday.

Most of the animals appeared to be healthy, said Bob Schoelkopf, director of the center. Two were taken to the center for evaluation, he said.

"The freezing temperatures have kept seals away from New Jersey beaches, but when the milder weather returns, the seals want to soak in the sun," Schoelkopf said.

Anyone who sees a stranded seal is urged to stay at least 50 feet away and call the center at 609-266-0538. Schoelkopf said taking a cellphone photo would aid the center with documentation. - Inquirer staff
