The body of a man found on a Cape May County beach was identified Wednesday as the former mayor of a Gloucester County borough.
Jeff Radio, 43, was mayor of Clayton from 2009 to 2011 and worked as a vice president with Sun National Bank. He was an active member of the Clayton school board.
His body was found Tuesday in Strathmere. New Jersey state police are investigating his death.
The results of an autopsy conducted Wednesday are pending, said spokesman Sgt. Jeff Flynn.
"It's a big loss for our town," said Tom Bianco, the current mayor. "Everyone is numb to this whole thing."
Bianco said he last saw Radio at the school board's meeting Oct. 20.
Bianco ordered flags in the borough lowered Wednesday.
"He's going to be greatly missed," he said.
In a statement late Wednesday, a Sun National Bank spokesman said: "Jeff Radio was a valued member of the Sun National Bank family. He was well-respected for his dedication to his colleagues, customers, and our community, and our thoughts are with his family."
Dozens of people offered condolences on Radio's Facebook page.
Radio's last activity on Facebook was a check-in Sunday at a Johnny Rockets restaurant in Atlantic City.
His wife, Nancy Althoff, expressed her grief on Facebook.
"I know that everyone who knew him loved him and will miss him," she wrote. "My life will never be the same. I need strength from everyone to help me go on. He was my soul mate."
