Assailant sought after Northeast rape attempt

Police searched Northeast Philadelphia's Pennypack Park and the surrounding area yesterday morning for the man they said tried to assault a woman.

Police searched Northeast Philadelphia's Pennypack Park and the surrounding area yesterday morning for the man they said tried to assault a woman.

Police said the attack happened about 7:25 a.m. in the 2800 block of Holme Avenue. A man grabbed a 28-year-old woman by the waist and tried to drag her into the park. She did not hear the man approach because she was wearing headphones, police said.

She fought him off, the man ran away, and the woman called police. A full-scale search that included dogs yielded nothing.

The woman described her attacker as 6-feet, 2-inches tall with a heavy build. Police said she could not determine his race or any other characteristics because he wore a white plastic mask and a black hoodie pulled tight to his face. - Inquirer staff
