Phila. doctor gets 7 years for illegally selling pills

A Philadelphia doctor was sentenced Wednesday to seven years and three months in federal prison for illegally prescribing drugs in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia, prosecutors said. Laurence T. McKinney, 54, ran a prescription "pill mill" from his office at 7514 Frankford Ave., where patients could buy prescriptions for Percocet and Xanax for a $100 fee. He was convicted in March on 30 of 49 counts of illegal distribution of controlled substances and one count of maintaining a place for the distribution. McKinney also was sentenced to three years of supervised release. His medical license will be suspended for 10 years. He was ordered to report to prison Nov. 1. - Robert Moran
