David Garcia | Environmental writer, 63
David Garcia, 63, a Hispanic television journalist who became known as "Earthman" for his environmental reporting, died Tuesday of liver failure in Palm Desert, Calif.
After attending Baylor University, Mr. Garcia was hired by a radio station in his hometown. From there, he moved on to the ABC television-radio affiliate in Dallas, to New York for the ABC radio network, and then on to ABC television. He was one of only a handful of Hispanics who were network correspondents in the 1970s. He covered the White House, including the Watergate scandal and Ford and Carter administrations. He later was the network's bureau chief for Latin America.
He got the nickname while working for KNBC-TV in California when a newscaster introduced an environmental story by joking that "Earthman" was on the way. - AP
