Sports in Brief: Arbitrator to hear NFL union's claim

The NFL players' union grievance against the league in the Saints bounties scandal will be heard Wednesday by arbitrator Shyam Das, fired earlier Monday by Major League Baseball.

The NFL players' union grievance against the league in the Saints bounties scandal will be heard Wednesday by arbitrator Shyam Das, fired earlier Monday by Major League Baseball.

The union claims NFL commissioner Roger Goodell doesn't have the authority to hand out discipline for player conduct that occurred before the current collective bargaining agreement was finalized last August. The players argue that a CBA arbitrator, and not Goodell, has the right to decide player punishment under such circumstances, as well as rule on any appeals.

Das, who will hear the case, was fired as the permanent arbitrator for baseball on Monday, but that does not affect his status with the NFL and NFLPA.

The Soul (7-2) sent defensive back Micheaux Robinson to the Jacksonville Sharks (3-5) and acquired defensive lineman T.J. Langley.

The Vikings' stadium deal that Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law Monday prevents the public from getting a look at the team's finances during their partnership to build the $975 million stadium.

The law commits the state and city of Minneapolis to pay a combined $498 million, while the team will bring in $477 million from private sources.

One provision would shield "any financial information" of the team's from public eyes.

COLLEGES: Penn State will host Boston College on Nov. 28 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Basketball Challenge. Penn State won, 62-54, at B.C. last season.

Colonial Athletic Association commissioner Tom Yeager said he has not been contacted by Virginia Commonwealth or the Atlantic Ten about the Rams switching conferences.

CBSSports.com, citing "industry sources," said VCU will join the A-10 in 2013. VCU has acknowledged considering a change in affiliation.

TENNIS: In a matchup of former French Open champions, 13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-4, 6-3, in a windy first-round match at the Italian Open in Rome.

Francesca Schiavone was defeated in front of her home fans by 39th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova, 6-3, 6-4.

SOCCER: Former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy has retired. The 35-year-old Dutchman, who played this season for Malaga in the Spanish league, said that on Sunday "I played my last game as a professional."

Malaga earned a spot in the Champions League, but Van Nistelrooy said he won't play.

"My big dream was to play in the Champions League with Malaga, but the moment to say goodbye has come," he said. "Playing at the maximum level forces me to recognize that I have reached my physical limits."

Van Nistelrooy scored a league-best 25 goals to lead ManU to the Premier League title in 2003.

GOLF: Tiger Woods will play in the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., for the first time.

Organizers said Woods had committed to play July 5-8 in the three-year-old event.

Phil Mickelson already has said he is returning to the Greenbrier, giving the young event two of the biggest names in golf.
