About the regatta: The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is a 21/2-mile race on the Schuylkill. It was founded in 1970 by Lyman S.A. Perry, J. Pattison III, and Raul Betancourt, all members of the University Barge Club, as a race for anyone who rowed. It became a two-day event in 2008.

About head races: A head race is one in which competitors race against the clock over a course typically two or three miles long. It features a rolling start at intervals of 10 to 15 seconds and is timed over a set distance. The boat that rows the course in the fastest time wins its event, not the first boat to cross the finish line. Sprint races, on the other hand, are usually 1,000 to 2,000 meters long, and the winner is the boat that crosses the finish line first.

About the course: The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta starts above the Strawberry Mansion bridge near Hunting Park Avenue and finishes approximately 21/2 miles downriver above the Viking Statue and Boathouse Row.

The competitors: The catagories of rowers are high school, colleges, open, masters, adaptive and recreational.

Sponsors: The presenting sponsor is NSM Insurance Group. The other top sponsors are GPTMC, Alden Rowing, East River Bank, Aramark and Exelon.
