St. John's split with basketball coach Steve Lavin on Friday after five seasons, announcing a week following a loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament that they had "mutually agreed to part ways."

The Red Storm (21-12) lost, 76-64, to San Diego State, reaching the NCAAs in Lavin's first and last seasons. He had a year remaining on his contract.

"In life, change is inevitable, so I take the long view. I'm grateful for my time teaching at St. John's University," said the 50-year-old Lavin.

Tyndall fired. Tennessee fired men's basketball coach Donnie Tyndall after one season, though athletic director Dave Hart said the university never would have hired him had it known the details of his unethical conduct at Southern Mississippi during his tenure there.

Hart fired Tyndall, 44, after details of an NCAA probe were revealed, though UT officials have said they did their due diligence in vetting his background.

Hart said Tyndall - who was 16-16 - acknowledged deleting e-mails that could have been relevant to the investigation.
