Temple advances with upset of Xavier

Tenth-seeded Temple upset seventh-seeded Xavier in the first-round of the Atlantic Ten women's basketball tournament at Hagen Arena on Friday.

Victoria Macaulay scored 12 points and hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the Owls (13-17) to a quarterfinal matchup with second-seeded Charlotte (24-4) on Saturday at 5 p.m. Rateska Brown came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points for the Owls.

Xavier (13-16) took a 12-3 advantage early, but an 18-3 Temple run in the second half put the game out of reach for Xavier.

In other games:

Fifth-seeded Duquesne got 15 points off the bench from Orsi Nurkic and the Dukes topped 12th seeded Virginia Commonwealth, 64-58. Duquesne improved to 23-6 overall and will face fourth-seeded tournament host St. Joseph's (20-8) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30.

Eighth-seeded George Washington (14-15) opened the tournament with a 59-53 win over No. 9 seed Richmond (16-15). The Colonials advance to take on No. 1 seed Dayton (26-1) at noon Saturday.

 No. 11 seed St. Louis (12-18) upset sixth-seeded Butler, 44-41. St. Louis advances to take on No. 3 seed Fordham at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
