Carl Hagelin had a goal and an assist, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 27 shots, and the New York Rangers earned a 4-1 victory against the host Florida Panthers on Friday night.
Brad Richards, Michael Del Zotto, and Brandon Dubinsky also scored for the Rangers, who have won six of seven.
Ryan McDonagh had two assists for New York, which leads the Eastern Conference with 50 points.
With 7.6 seconds left in the game, Del Zotto delivered a cross-check to Tomas Kopecky in front of the net knocking Kopecky's helmet off. Kopecky responded with a punch that knocked Del Zotto to the ice. The incident prompted a fight with Kopecky and Mike Rupp.
Alex Ovechkin scored early and late, Tomas Vokoun made 25 saves, and the Washington Capitals got one back against one of their worst nemesis of the season Friday night, beating the visiting Buffalo Sabres, 3-1.
One of Ovechkin's two goals was actually a pass attempt that got deflected into the net, but the Capitals captain has five goals in seven games, a further sign that he is emerging from the spotty play that has run parallel to Washington's slow start.
Nicklas Backstrom also scored his 13th of the season - his 100th career NHL goal - for the Capitals.
Elsewhere: Daniel Alfredsson scored his 400th career goal at 3 minutes, 31 seconds of overtime to give the host Ottawa Senators a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames. . . . Brent Seabrook scored a goal to break a tie early in the third period, and the host Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2. . . . Martin Erat scored in the fifth round of the shootout to give the Nashville Predators a 2-1 victory over the host St. Louis Blues.
The Sabres high-priced defenseman Christian Ehrhoff will be out for an extended period after he was injured in Friday night's loss to the Capitals. Ehrhoff left the game after a fight with Washington's Troy Brouwer late in the first period and did not return.
Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said Ehrhoff was going to "miss some time ... probably weeks." Ruff did not disclose Ehrhoff's injury.
Buffalo has been hit hard by injuries. Among those out Friday were defenseman Tyler Myers and forwards Ville Leino, Corey Tropp, Tyler Ennis, Nathan Gerbe and Colin Stuart.
