AUTO RACING: Driver Dan Wheldon was killed when his head hit a post in the fencing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, contact that created a "non-survivable injury" to the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner.

IndyCar officials said in their final report on the Oct. 16 accident that several factors contributed to what became a "perfect storm," and no one reason could be singled out as the sole cause of the 15-car accident that launched Wheldon's vehicle into a catchfence. IndyCar found it is "impossible to determine with certainty that the result would have been any different if one or more of the factors did not exist."

NCAA: A plan to give athletes a $2,000 stipend has been shelved. The NCAA said enough schools, 125 of them, called for an override of the plan approved in October to suspend it until the board of directors convenes in January.

LOCAL COLLEGES: Temple's Ramone Moore and St. Joseph's Carl Jones were named Big Five men's basketball players of the week. Laura Sweeney of Villanova won the women's honor.

Penn's Tyler Bernardini was named co-Ivy League men's basketball player of the week with Harvard's Kyle Casey.

BASEBALL: The Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, and Chicago Cubs have emerged as the teams generating the most buzz in the bidding for prized Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish.

Darvish's club, the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, is reviewing teams' offers for the right to exclusively negotiate with the righty. The Fighters have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to accept a bid, at which point the winning club has 30 days to agree to a contract with Darvish, 25.

Major League Baseball owners unanimously ratified a five-year collective bargaining agreement, that guarantees labor peace through 2016. The players' association had already ratified the agreement.

Lefthanded reliever J.C. Romero, 35, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals. The former Phillie ended the 2011 season with Colorado after beginning the year with the Phils. He was released by the Phillies in June, by the Nationals in July, and by the Yankees in August, spending time in the Washington and New York minor-league systems.

FIGURE SKATING: Michelle Kwan was elected to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Kwan was the only selection for the class of 2012. Kwan won 43 championships, including nine U.S. and five world championships. She also won the silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics and bronze at the 2002 Games.
