Fri. S.J. basketball roundup: Westampton Tech holds off Delsea

Shaun Russell, Marcus Stewart and Marquel Davis combined for 36 points, 19 rebounds and 9 assists, enabling Westampton Tech to withstand a late Delsea surge to win the Ray Martin Bracket boys' basketball championship, 50-48, on Friday at Wildwood's Boardwalk Classic.

Stewart's free throw with 28 seconds remaining gave Tech a five-point cushion. Cedric Elleby's 16 points and 14 rebounds paced the Crusaders, who made it interesting with a late three-pointer by Kyle McCulley (10 points).

Vineland battled through two overtimes before falling, 58-54, to Wilmington Christian in the third-place game.

Eddie Thomas totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Clan, which committed 23 turnovers - compared to just 10 by Wilmington Christian.

Middle Township nearly squandered a 15-point first-half lead in holding off Egg Harbor Township, 51-47, in the semifinals of the Chickie Ludman Bracket.

Tom Catanoso and Tommy Feraco combined for 26 points, and Jeff Barber grabbed a dozen rebounds as the Panthers dominated the boards, 42-23. Rahim Bunch's 16 points paced the Eagles.

Middle Township advances to Saturday's championship against Woodbury - a 63-42 winner over Cedar Creek.

Mike Smith had 20 points and Mario Joyner-Vila made 4 of 5 shots from beyond the arc in scoring 14 for the Thundering Herd. Damon Mitchell's eight-point, 12-rebound performance led Cedar Creek.

Paul Moore poured in a game-high 21 points, Junior Saintel scored 16 and Larry Jones produced a double-double - with 15 points and a dozen rebounds - to power Holy Spirit over Atlantic Christian, 69-29, in the Classic Showcase.

Al DiPatri Memorial. Ron Curry became the 10th player in Paul VI history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, as he and Kris O'Connor scored 20 points apiece to power the host Eagles past New Beginnings, 79-45.

Kyle Green got off to a blazing start, scoring 10 of his 26 points in the first quarter to put Camden Catholic on course for a 63-41 rout of Mariana Bracetti in a round-robin game at Paul VI.

Virginia Whitaker. Marc Schlessel's 22 points keyed the Cherry Hill East offense while Jake Gurkin's five blocked shots led the defense, as the host Cougars mauled Gloucester Catholic, 69-34.

Chris Leary came through with 9 of his 11 points in an 18-8 game-ending run that carried Williamstown past Camden, 49-46.

Girls' Basketball

Our Lady of Mercy's title hopes were dashed in the final four seconds, when Kelsey Walton sank a pair of free throws to give Methacton a 35-33 win and the Ocean Cup Bracket championship of the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood.

Mariya Ruban grabbed seven rebounds and matched Ali Dandrea's 10 points to lead the Villagers.

Absegami fell to Central Regional in the third-place game, 42-32.

In other Boardwalk Classic action:

Erin Molina drained the go-ahead basket with :22 to go and Shawnee survived a pair of late misses by Pennsbury to win, 32-31, in the Jersey Shore Bracket. Molina finished with six points and 10 rebounds.

Despite 15 points by Summer Crilley, Holy Spirit never quite recovered from a second-quarter stumble, suffering a 53-42 loss to North Penn in the Boardwalk Cup.
