Sat. Pa. boys'; and girls' roundup: Buxbaum takes district title

North Penn's Mike Buxbaum knocked off top-seeded Kevin Wang of Conestoga to win the District 1 boys' tennis singles championship on Saturday at the Healthplex in Springfield.

Buxbaum, seeded No. 2, won, 7-5, 6-4, in the title match. Unionville's Michael Furr beat teammate John Wu, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, in the consolation.

In doubles competition, Conestoga's Jason Sutker and Eric Yen won the Class AAA title, and 2011 state champions Sam Borowsky and Max Blumenthal of Harriton won in Class AA.

Lacrosse

Junior attack Andrew Wofford had four goals and two assists as Shipley topped Chestnut Hill, 13-7, in the first round of the Inter-Ac Invitational at Malvern Prep.

Ian McGibbon recorded 10 saves for his 14th win of the season. The Gators advance to visit top-ranked Haverford School in the tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Also at Malvern, Drew Murray had six goals and Tyler Earley added three assists as Penn Charter beat Academy of the New Church, 15-5. Pierce Kraft added four goals and Jackson Tamasitis recorded 10 saves for the win.

Nonleague. Chris Daly scored five goals and Craig Markman netted a hat trick to help Lower Merion defeat visiting West Chester East, 14-8.

Baseball

Kevin McGowan's RBI double in the top of the seventh broke a scoreless tie and Haverford School rallied to top host Penncrest, 5-0, in a nonleague game. Pat Valentine posted the win as he struck out four and allowed one hit.

Matt Primavera hit a three-run double in the third inning and Chestnut Hill held on to edge visiting Peddie School, 4-3. Matt Kodnechak added an RBI and two hits. Mike Moriarty posted the win.

Vince Ceriale's two-out, two-run single in the sixth lifted Shipley over visiting Central, 9-8. Mike Camposano and Pierce Strickler each had two hits and two RBIs.

John LaPrise drove home five runs, including an RBI triple in the second inning, and Devon Prep turned away visiting Harriton, 9-6. Rich Gallo added three hits and three runs. C.J. Kohlbrenner struck out three in five innings for the win. Sophomore shortstop Jake Vesling went 3 for 4.

Sean Ferry went 2 for 3 with a run scored and one RBI as Monsignor Bonner blanked visiting Upper Darby, 4-0. Cole Trickel added an RBI double in the third.

Sophomore shortstop Bryan Rubin went 2 for 3 and scored once to lead Friends' Central past visiting Delco Christian, 4-1. Righty Charles Bears posted the win as he pitched the first three innings and fanned three.

Suburban One. Kyle Wanger went 2 for 2 and drove in three runs as Souderton downed visiting Pennridge, 10-6. Scott Giuliano added a pair of RBIs and Ryan Gryzwacz had two hits.

Softball

Sarah Rambo scored the game's opening run in the fourth and then drove home two runs in the fifth as Methacton dropped host Boyertown, 3-1, in a Pioneer Athletic Conference game. Methacton finished second in the league standings. Its the Warriors' best finish since joining the league four years ago.

Nonleague. Junior Bri Folwell slammed a three-run homer in the third inning and also was the winning pitcher as Friends' Central eased past Harriton, 15-6. The righty pitched seven innings, struck out two and walked three.
