NJSIAA Wrestling Championships: Holy Cross' Correnti closes in on state title

Matt Correnti is one win away from finishing off a perfect season for Holy Cross. The 195-pound junior won his 42d match of the season Saturday. He topped Danny DiLorenzi of Bergen Catholic, 4-2, in the semifinals of the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Matt Correnti is one win away from finishing off a perfect season for Holy Cross.

The 195-pound junior won his 42d match of the season Saturday. He topped Danny DiLorenzi of Bergen Catholic, 4-2, in the semifinals of the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The unbeaten Correnti won both the District 26 and Region 7 tournaments. One more victory will bring him his first state championship.

Correnti will face off against another wrestler with a 42-0 record, Keansburg's Tyree Sutton, in the state final on Sunday. The championships are scheduled for 3 p.m.

St. Joseph's C.J. LaFragola defeated Vinnie Maniero of St. Joseph (Montvale), 4-2, in sudden victory to advance to the final at 182 pounds.

LaFragola, the Region 8 and District 30 champion, improved to 42-1. LaFragola will face Kevin Mulligan of Bergen Catholic in the final.

Holy Spirit's Patrick D'Acry will return to the state final after winning a 2-1 tiebreaker over Ryan Pomrinca of North Hunterdon. The Region 8 and District 32 champ placed second in the state in 2014 at 113 pounds. He will have a chance for redemption at 126 pounds against Hanover Park's two-time state champion Anthony Cefolo.

Consolations. Clearview's Zach Firestone (36-1) won a 6-3 decision and a 7-6 decision in wrestlebacks to advance one match closer to the third-place bout at 120 pounds. Firestone faces Toms River South's Owen McClave.

Also for the Pioneers, Michael VanBrill earned a 12-3 major decision victory and a pin in consolation bouts. He moved one win away from the 132-pound third-place match. He will take on Salvatore Profaci of Monroe.

Kingsway's Quinn Kinner (106 pounds) fell in the quarterfinals. He will take on Jonathan Tropea of St. Joseph (Montvale) for a chance to advance to the third-place match.

His brother, Trace Kinner, earned a pin in 1 minute, 20 seconds and a 3-1 decision in wrestlebacks to remain in contention for a spot in the third-place match in the 113-pound weight class. He is 36-5. He faces Garrett O'Shea of Morris Knolls.
