Sat. Pa. boys and girls: Friends' Central wins title on no-hitter

The Friends' Central baseball team won its second Friends Schools League championship in three years Saturday, behind a no-hitter by senior righthander Aaron Ross.

Ross struck out seven as the host Phoenix defeated Germantown Friends, 6-0.

It was the second time this season that Ross no-hit the Tigers.

"That's huge on a championship stage," Friends' Central coach Ross Trachtenberg said. "He worked off his fastball, and his slider was excellent today. He challenged hitters and got ahead of hitters."

Ross contributed at the plate as well by driving in a run and scoring once. Senior shortstop Bryan Rubin went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Conestoga, the third seed in the District 1 tournament, advanced to the semifinals by holding off Springfield (Delco), 10-8, at Harriton.

Jake Scott paced Conestoga with four goals, and Pierre Atkinson had three assists.

The Pioneers' semifinal opponent will be 10th seed Avon Grove, which upset second seed Downingtown East, 11-5, sparked by five goals and an assist by Tanner Peck.

In other quarterfinals:

Top-seeded Radnor defeated No. 8 Great Valley, 10-8. Peter Donato led the Red Raiders with four goals and three assists, and Alex Manderack scored five times.

Fifth seed Garnet Valley used a balanced scoring attack to hold off No. 4 Upper Dublin, 8-7. Robert Raucci was the only Jaguar with more than one goal, scoring twice.

Germantown Friends broke three meet records in winning the Friends Schools League championship at Friends' Central.

Jordan May broke the 400-meter mark with a time of 49.12 seconds, and Sammi Aziz ran a record 9-minute, 43.27-second time in the 3,200. The Tigers surpassed the 4x100 relay record with a time of 44.04.

Top seed Radnor held off ninth-seeded Garnet Valley's comeback attempt and won, 11-10, in the District 1 quarterfinals at West Chester East. The Red Raiders led by 10-4 with 12:15 to go but didn't win a draw the rest of the game.

Taylor Quinn's hat trick paced the Red Raiders. Haley Warden scored four goals for the Jaguars.

Radnor will play Harriton in the semifinals on Tuesday. Caleigh Foust and Sabrina Tabasso scored three goals each in the Rams' 12-7 victory over Strath Haven.

In other quarterfinals:

Ali Gormley scored the game-tying goal and then the winner a minute later to lead Springfield (Delco) past Conestoga, 12-10. Ali Gormley finished with a game-high four goals. Megan Cameron topped the Pioneers with three.

Seventh seed Boyertown used a strong second half to upset second-seeded Great Valley, 10-8. Kait DeHaven had two goals and two assists for the Bears. Boyertown's Rachel Engler and the Patriots' Kim Hooven and Emily Scullin also scored twice.

Friends' Central defeated Germantown Friends, 7-6, to win the Friends Schools League championship at Philadelphia University. All seven of the Phoenix's runs were unearned.

Germantown Friends won the Friends Schools League championship at Friends' Central, setting six meet records: Sarah Walker in the 400 (56.97) and 800 (2:17.51), Eliza Lukens-Day in the 1,600 (5:00.35) and 3,200 (11:07.65), Eleanor Thompson in the pole vault (9 feet, 6 inches), and the team in the 4x400 (4:02.98).

Lansdale Catholic named Amy Kradzinski as coach. Kradzinski, a 2002 Lansdale Catholic graduate, was most recently an assistant coach at Gwynedd Mercy.
