Source: Union will play Real Madrid at Linc

All signs point toward the Union playing host to international soccer power Real Madrid this summer.

All signs point toward the Union playing host to international soccer power Real Madrid this summer.

A formal announcement could come later this week, but a soccer source indicated that the two are expected to meet July 23 at Lincoln Financial Field.

The two sides are reportedly tying up some final details. Union officials were unavailable for comment.

If this goes through it would be the second consecutive year that the Union hosted an international soccer power.

On July 21 last year, the Union hosted England's Manchester United at Lincoln Financial Field. Manchester United was the 1-0 winner in that friendly before a crowd of 44,213.

In another matter, Union team manager Peter Nowak said Tuesday that a decision has not been made on whether the team will sign midfielder Veljko Paunovic, a 33-year-old Serbian international.

Paunovic is on trial with the Union and played for their reserve team in a 1-0 loss on Monday to visiting D.C. United.

"We just haven't made a decision yet," Nowak said.

The Union (4-3-2) realize they must improve an offense that has yet to score more than one goal in any game. On Saturday, the Union play host to the Chicago Fire (1-3-5) at PPL Park.
