Ask Sir Charles

Workplace compliments: Hot or Not?

Q: I work at an advertising agency where many of my female colleagues dress incredibly well and look really, really good. I want to compliment them, but I'm also a single straight dude, and I don't want to come off as creepy or like I'm hitting on them. Is it ever appropriate to tell a co-worker of the opposite sex that they look, well, hot?

A: Of course that's appropriate. Women dress up so you can tell them they're hot.

Now, sexual harassment is a real thing, but to tell another person they're attractive and look nice? There's nothing wrong with that. That's why they dress nice.

Let me tell you something, there's a difference between telling a woman she looks nice at work and grabbing her or patting her on the ass.

Q: Philly fans have always had this reputation for booing. In fact, I've lived here my whole life and I can't remember a time when Philly fans were not known for booing. I don't think it's as bad as it used to be, back in the bad old days at Veterans Stadium, compared to how it is now. But it still happens, and my question is this: Do you think it's ever appropriate to boo your team?

A: Well, you have to be careful when you're on the road - some places are hostile toward visiting fans. But at home, you should support your team as much as possible.

Is there a time you should boo? Of course there is: When you think your team's not giving a good effort. But when things are going bad for a team, sometimes you can pick them up when they aren't playing well. Sometimes when fans boo, it just makes it worse.
