2024 NBA championship odds: Where do the Sixers stand in the betting markets?

The Denver Nuggets are this season's NBA champions, so it's time to look ahead at next season's title odds with a specific focus on the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Denver Nuggets are your 2023 NBA Champions, so it’s time to look forward to next season.

We’re already looking toward 2024 NBA Championship odds, where the Philadelphia 76ers stand in the futures betting markets and if the odds accurately reflect the state of the team entering 2024.

Let’s discuss the odds, breaking down the favorites, the Sixers, and others.

Odds are courtesy of FanDuel, current at the time of publishing and subject to change.

NBA Championship 2024 Odds: The favorites

Predictably, the Denver Nuggets (+460) sit atop the betting markets for next year’s title.

Honestly, I might bet that number right now. The Nuggets have their core locked up through the 2024-25 season, with only Ish Smith and Jeff Green off the books for next season (in terms of actual role players). Christian Braun turned into a real contributor during this playoff run, and he’s on the books for only $2.9 million in 2023-24.

Meanwhile, Nikola Jokic is still the best player in the league, Jamal Murray is only going to improve, Mike Malone is getting better every year, and this team now has legit championship experience.

The Nuggets fit the profile of a team that can repeat.

To my surprise, the Milwaukee Bucks (+480) are the runner-up betting favorites. The Bucks are in an interesting spot, considering Khris Middleton has a player option while Brook Lopez and Jae Crowder are both UFAs.

The Boston Celtics (+500) and Phoenix Suns (+700) are also among the favorites.

The only thing that could alter Boston’s odds is a trade of Jaylen Brown, and I’m doubtful that will occur.

The Suns, who are reportedly looking to trade Chris Paul, have the Kevin Durant-Devin Booker--Deandre Ayton core locked up, but they are dangerously thin otherwise.

Notably, the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat (+1900) aren’t among the favorites in the betting markets, sitting with the eighth-best odds to win the 2024 title. For what it’s worth, the Heat bring back everyone important for next season.

NBA Championship 2024 Odds: Where do the Sixers stand?

The Sixers sit with the sixth-shortest odds to win the 2024 title, sandwiched in between the Golden State Warriors (+1200) and Los Angeles Lakers (+1500).

The 14-1 odds imply a 6.7% chance the Sixers will take home the title in 2023. I believe these odds are fair, although a lot can change in the coming weeks.

For example, James Harden still has a player option for next year, and a CBS report indicates he will decline the deal.

We also haven’t heard much about new head coach Nick Nurse. Will he have a voice in roster reconstruction? Or any other important, top-down organizational issues?

Either way, I am bullish on the future of Philadelphia basketball.

Harden opting out of his deal would open the door for electric young offensive star Tyrese Maxey to become the lead guard.

Maxey’s overall statistical profile hasn’t quite caught up to Harden’s, but Maxey will only improve while Harden regresses with age.

Why wouldn’t you want to bet on a 22-year-old athletic phenom coming off a 20-PPG, 3.5-APG season? He also shot 43.4% from 3 and turned into a league-average defender (he was horrible defensively in 2020-21 and also struggled last year).

Maxey fully broke out during this playoff run, showing the full extent of his arsenal while twice recording 30-point efforts.

If you feel inclined to bet on Philly futures for the upcoming season, it would probably be wise to wait until Harden opts out of his deal, which should lengthen the Sixers’ title odds.

A 20-1 ticket on the Sixers at that exact moment would look great. Hopefully, they make meaningful upgrades in the weeks following the placing of that ticket, and the Sixers enter the season with hope behind Embiid, Maxey, Nurse and a reliable supporting cast.
