Sports Media Notes

ABC and ESPN have added former Houston Rockets coach

Jeff Van Gundy

as an analyst for their No. 1 NBA broadcasting team of

Mike Breen

and

Mark Jackson.

Van Gundy begins work this weekend.

Jackson is rumored to be an NBA coaching candidate. If he is hired as a coach, Van Gundy, who was fired by the Rockets yesterday, could slip into the top analyst's role for next year. It will be interesting to see how Jackson and Van Gundy mesh as analysts.

Van Gundy did a good job in his former analyst's role at TNT. Jackson, also an analyst for New Jersey Nets games, has been solid but hardly spectacular with ABC.

Fun banter

TNT's

Charles Barkley

continues to be the most entertaining and irreverent studio sports analyst. After a team is eliminated from the playoffs, Barkley's fellow analyst

Kenny "The Jet" Smith

pulls out his fishing rod, casts it, and says, "It's time to go fishing."

Following Golden State's ouster from the playoffs, Smith was doing his fishing routine when Barkley interjected, "You might be the only black man in America who can't fish."

Of course, Smith gets his barbs in on Barkley. After Barkley criticized Smith's appearance on the TV sitcom The Game, Smith replied, "It was better than you on Space Jam."

The banter among Barkley, Smith and host Ernie Johnson Jr. is what keeps TNT's Inside the NBA the top pregame or postgame show for any sport.

Kolber to NASCAR

ESPN's

Suzy Kolber,

the pride of Upper Dublin High School, has added NASCAR duties to her busy schedule, which includes her role as field reporter for

Monday Night Football.

Kolber will host NASCAR Countdown for ESPN and ESPN on ABC's coverage of the final 17 NASCAR Nextel Cup races of 2007, beginning with the July 29 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. She also will host NASCAR Countdown for NASCAR Busch Series telecasts on ESPN2 and will host selected practice and qualifying coverage for both series.
