Archbishop Carroll High has successfully followed a hard-way route to the regular portion of the Catholic League baseball playoffs.
In somewhat easy fashion, the Patriots on Saturday swept both ends of a pre-playoff doubleheader at La Salle High, to break a three-way tie for fourth place.
With senior righthander Chris Dengler pitching a two-hitter (and yielding no earned runs), Carroll first bested Roman Catholic, 9-4. Tim Collins, also a senior righthander, then matched that feat in a 9-0 success over Kennedy-Kenrick.
The Patriots' most productive hitter was Tim Weglicki, who finished the day 5-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored. Dengler, who played third base in game two, totaled four RBI, as did Kyle Baker.
Oddity of the day: In Roman-Carroll, the only strikeout victims were the game's first and last batter.
Tomorrow's first-round playoffs match Carroll-Bonner at Philadelphia University and Judge-La Salle at Widener University. Both games start at 3:30. *
