As New Jersey's high school basketball season kicks off tonight, thousands of players from Wildwood to Willingboro to Westwood will begin quests for league, sectional and state championships.

New Jersey is well-known for the quality of its basketball, both in terms of teams and individual talent. Here is a quick look around the state at some of the players and teams to keep an eye on this season.

Top Boys' Teams

St. Patrick's, Elizabeth

Coach: Kevin Boyle

Skinny:

Seeking third consecutive Tournament of Champions title, the Celtics are ranked second and third in the nation in ESPN and USA Today polls, respectively. New starter Quintrell Thomas, a 6-8 forward, is headed to Kansas next season.

St. Anthony, Jersey City

Last Year:

Skinny:

Including Rutgers recruit Mike Rosario, six St. Anthony players have signed letters of intent. Guard Travon Woodall and junior Dominic Cheek provide the Friars with multiple offensive weapons.

St. Benedict's Prep, Newark

Coach: Dan Hurley

Last Year:

Skinny:

St. Benedict's is led by Louisville-bound forward Samardo Samuels. He is supported by junior guard Tamir Jackson and 6-foot-9 center Greg Echenique.

University, Newark

Coach: Felicia Oliver

Last Year:

Skinny:

University won the Tournament of Champions last season behind freshman Laurin Mincy, who averaged 19.9 points and eight rebounds per game.

Shabazz, Newark

Coach: Vanessa Watson

Last Year:

Skinny:

The Bulldogs are looking to return to the Tournament of Champions after the NJSIAA disqualified the team for a scheduling error last season. Shabazz won the tournament in 2006.

Top Players - Boys

Samardo Samuels, senior, 6-9, 230, forward, St. Benedict's

The highly recruited forward averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds last season.

Mike Rosario, senior, 6-2, 170, guard, St. Anthony

The sharpshooting Rutgers recruit scored 15.8 points per game as a junior.

Tyshawn Taylor, senior, 6-3, 160, guard, St. Anthony

Rosario's backcourt partner is headed to Marquette next fall.

Quintrell Thomas, senior, 6-8, 225, forward, St. Patrick

Thomas averaged 7.5 rebounds off the bench last season.

Jordan Theodore, senior, 6-0, 170, guard, Paterson Catholic

The Seton Hall-bound guard hit 38 three-pointers and dished out 6.7 assists last season.

Laurin Mincy, sophomore, 6-0, guard/forward, University

The versatile sophomore was an all-state selection last season.

Nadirah McKenith, junior, 5-4, guard, University

She set a Tournament of Champions record with 13 assists in last season's title game.
