MEMPHIS - Brian Gay played his way into the U.S. Open yesterday, completing a wire-to-wire victory in the St. Jude Classic.

Gay earned the berth with his second win in his last five events to grab the Open exemption as a multiple winner in the last calendar year.

The native Texan led by only a stroke after each of the first three rounds at TPC Southwind, then shot a third straight 4-under 66 to pull away at 18-under 262.

David Toms finished with a 65, and Bryce Molder had a 70 as both finished 5 shots back.

Phil Mickelson and John Daly tied for 59th.

Ordeal for senior golfer. The Champions Tour's Ken Green, who was injured in a recreational vehicle crash in Mississippi last Monday that killed his brother and girlfriend, will have his lower right leg amputated, his agent said.

Kevin Richardson said Green, 50, is struggling with the "double whammy" of the deaths and his own career-threatening injuries.
