IronPigs explode for 16-run night

DURHAM, N.C. - David Newhan ripped a grand slam and doubled in another run to lead the Lehigh Valley IronPigs past the Charlotte Knights, 16-8, in the International League last night.

Miguel Cairo and Mike Cervenak each drove in three runs and Mike Spidale was 4 for 5 and raised his average to .344 for Lehigh Valley.

TRENTON - Tim Alderson allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings as the Defenders beat the Thunder in the Eastern League.

Before the game, the Thunder added righthander Jose Valdez from triple-A Scranton and put righthander Eric Wordekemper on the disabled list.
