Nicklas Lidstrom, the 39-year-old captain of the Detroit Red Wings, wants to play for Sweden in the 2010 Olympics, the Detroit Free Press reported.

He said he waited to decide whether to play in the Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, in February because he wanted to make sure of his condition when the NHL season opened.

Lidstrom scored the winning goal in the gold-medal game against Finland in 2006.

Jackets-Blues trade

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired defenseman Brendan Bell and forward Tomas Kana from the St. Louis Blues yesterday in exchange for forward Pascal Pelletier.

Bell and Kana have been assigned to the club's American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse.

Ward returns

The Carolina Hurricanes activated goaltender Cam Ward from the long-term injured list. Ward missed 13 games after he was cut on the leg by a skate in a game at Columbus on Nov. 7. He is eligible to play at New Jersey tonight.

Ward, 25, is one of the cornerstones of the Carolina franchise. He won the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoffs MVP when the Hurricanes' won the Stanley Cup in 2006.

He is 2-9-3 with a 2.97 goals-against average this season. - Inquirer wire services
