Former Buffalo coach Turner Gill officially became the head coach at Kansas yesterday.

Kansas will formally introduce Gill as successor to Mark Mangino today.

Mangino, the most successful Kansas coach in 100 years, resigned under pressure on Dec. 3 after a 2-week investigation into alleged mistreatment of players. Just 2 years earlier, Mangino had been consensus national coach of the year following a 12-1 campaign and a victory in the Orange Bowl.

Gill is no stranger to the Big 12, having been an option quarterback for Nebraska in the early 1980s.

* Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh has signed a 3-year contract extension that will keep him at the school through 2014.

Harbaugh is finishing his third season at Stanford, guiding the 19th-ranked Cardinal (8-4) to their first bowl bid in 8 years. They will face Oklahoma in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31.
