The Washington Nationals have released former Phillies catcher Chris Coste to make space for Jamie Burke, who moved up from triple-A Syracuse on Saturday.

Coste, 37, was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets on March 29 but has been on the disabled list all season.

Catcher Carlos Maldonado went on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right thumb.

Maldonado, 31, summoned from Syracuse when Ivan Rodriguez was placed on the DL on May 24, was hitting 3 for 11 with a home run and three RBIs in four games.

Burke, 38, was hitting .278 for Syracuse. He is a career .277 hitter in seven major-league seasons with Anaheim, the Chicago White Sox, Seattle, and Washington.

Cardinals. Looking to add depth to its bench, St. Louis signed outfielder Randy Winn. Winn, a switch-hitter with a .285 career average, hit .213 with one homer and eight RBIs in 29 games with the New York Yankees before he was designated for assignment last month. . . . In the bottom of the sixth inning of Saturday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Cards third baseman David Freese left with an apparent ankle injury after awkwardly touching third base.

Mets. New York placed lefthander Oliver Perez on the 15-day disabled list because of patella tendinitis in his right knee, retroactive to Tuesday.

Red Sox. Boston has recalled outfielder Josh Reddick from triple-A Pawtucket and optioned reliever Scott Atchison to that club.

Royals. Kansas City outfielder Rick Ankiel and lefthander John Parrish, who both have missed more than 30 games because of injuries, start minor-league rehab assignments Tuesday.

Orioles. Baltimore righthander Brad Bergesen has been temporarily removed from the starting rotation so he can provide help to an overworked bullpen.
