Brown says he wasn't meeting his own standard at Texas

Texas coach Mack Brown said Sunday he's resigning because his teams haven't been living up to the winning standard he helped create.

Brown said school president Bill Powers told him he could stay when the three met Friday. But after thinking it over further, Brown decided it was time to move on after 16 seasons to let Texas find a new coach who can bring in new energy.

Brown's teams won 10 games every year from 2001 to '09 and won the national championship after the 2005 season. Brown also won two Big 12 titles.

But the Longhorns have had four straight seasons with at least four losses. Texas went 8-4 this year, and Brown's final game will be the Dec. 30 Alamo Bowl against Oregon.

Brown will become a consultant to Powers.
