Sports in Brief: James and Parratto hold lead at diving nationals

James of Midland, Texas, and Parratto of Dover, N.H., totaled 286.98 points. Murphy Bromberg of Bexley, Ohio, and Cheyenne Cousineau of Temperance, Mich., were second at 270.75. The finals are Sunday.
In women's 3-meter synchro, Deidre Freeman of Grinnell, Iowa, and Maren Taylor of Arlington, Va., qualified first with 309.90 points. Casey Matthews of Getzville, N.Y., and Michelle Cabassol of Montgomery, Texas, were second at 289.62. The finals are Saturday.
WINTER SPORTS Aksel Lund Svindal increased his overall World Cup lead by winning the Val Gardena super-G in Italy for the third time, while Ted Ligety skied off the course and Bode Miller finished eighth after colliding with the last gate.
SOCCER Current national team stars Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey were voted to the U.S. Soccer Federation's All-Time Men's National Team Best XI as part of the governing body's 100th-anniversary celebration.
Donovan was selected on 52 of 57 ballots in voting, the highest total of any player.
Brad Friedel (25 votes) was picked for goalkeeper ahead of Kasey Keller (14), Tim Howard (13) and Tony Meola (4).
Marcelo Balboa, Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo and Eddie Pope were voted at defender, and Donovan and Dempsey were joined in the midfielder by Claudio Reyna and Tab Ramos. Brian McBride and Eric Wynalda were selected at forward.
