Boston College has extended football coach
's contract by two years, through 2020, after he led the Eagles to 14 wins in his first two seasons.
Boston College (7-5) will face Penn State (6-6) in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27.
The former Temple Owls coach replaced Frank Spaziani after the Eagles went 2-10 in 2012 and led them to a 7-6 record, including a 42-19 loss to Arizona in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl. This year, B.C. nearly beat undefeated Florida State, losing by 20-17.
Third-ranked Oregon will be without star cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu when it faces Jameis Winston and Florida State in their playoff game next month, Oregon coach Mark Helfrich confirmed. The senior All-America was hurt Tuesday in a noncontact drill. The coach wouldn't disclose the nature of the injury.
Temple will play American Athletic Conference games at Lincoln Financial Field against Central Florida, Memphis, Connecticut, and Tulane next season. The Owls will travel to face AAC foes Cincinnati, East Carolina, South Florida, and Southern Methodist. In its nonconference games, Temple will host Penn State and Notre Dame and visit Massachusetts and Charlotte.
SOCCER The Union and Phillies will be conducting spring training side by side.
The Union announced they will conduct preseason training for the 2015 Major League Soccer season in Clearwater, Fla., in February. The Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex is across the street from the Phillies' complex.
The team will depart for Clearwater on Feb. 2 and will complete their preseason there from Feb. 16 to 28, playing in the IMG Tournament in Bradenton.
Christen Press scored four goals, and Carli Lloyd had a hat trick as the United States women's soccer team routed Argentina, 7-0, securing its place in the Sunday final of the four-team International Tournament of Brasilia. The Americans needed help from host Brazil, which beat China, 4-1.
The U.S. men's team rose one spot to 27th in the December FIFA rankings, despite November losses to Colombia and Ireland. The top teams remained unchanged: Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Brazil.
VOLLEYBALL No. 5 Penn State knocked off top-ranked Stanford, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, in the NCAA women's volleyball semifinals in Oklahoma City, and the Nittany Lions (35-3) will seek their seventh national title Saturday against unseeded Brigham Young. BYU (30-4) advanced to the final for the first time by upsetting second-ranked Texas, 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 26-24.
HORSE RACING JK She'salady became the first 2-year-old female pacer in harness racing history to be named horse of the year by the U.S. Harness Writers Association. The filly edged out 5-year-old pacer Sweet Lou, who was named the top pacer. Three-year-old filly Shake It Cerry was named the top trotter.
SAILING Australian yachtsman Iain Murray, who helped guide the last America's Cup through the aftermath of a sailor's death, is returning as regatta director. Murray made dozens of safety recommendations for the 2013 America's Cup after British sailor Andrew Simpson was killed when Artemis Racing's catamaran crumpled during a training run on San Francisco Bay.
