Washington centerfielder Denard Span had surgery Monday to repair an abdominal muscle injury and will miss the Nationals' opener next month.
Manager Matt Williams said the projected time for Span's return is uncertain and added "you're looking at four to six weeks before he can start doing baseball activity again."
Span had surgery to repair a sports hernia injury in December and reported discomfort at the start of spring training, which he attributed to offseason training.
He went 1 for 2 in the Nationals' spring training opener on March 5.
Williams said the injury is "similar" to the one Span had corrected in December and that should help him in rehabilitation.

The sign atop Yankee Stadium from 1976 until it closed in 2008, composed of 13 separate 10-foot blue letters, will be put up for auction as a single lot by Hall of Fame outfielder Reggie Jackson, auction house Sotheby's said in a news release.
Sotheby's estimated a sale price from $300,000 to $600,000 for the letters, which will be part of its April 1 New York Sale, featuring 85 items "inspired by and celebrating New York City."
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is sidelined indefinitely because of a mild concussion that he suffered when a foul ball hit him on the mask.
Mesoraco was hit on Saturday during a spring training game against Kansas City and was held out of a game the following day. He's being tested daily and is confined to riding a stationary bicycle and walking on a treadmill to stay in shape.
It's his third concussion as a professional. The other two came on collisions at home plate. Mesoraco says this one isn't as bad as the others, which happened in 2010 and 2012. It's unclear when he'll be allowed to resume a full range of activities. He's considering changing his equipment to protect against another concussion.
Floyd to have MRI
Indians starting pitcher Gavin Floyd will undergo an MRI exam on his troublesome right elbow.
Manager Terry Francona said Floyd, who underwent reconstructive elbow surgery in 2013 and made just nine starts for Atlanta last season before fracturing his elbow, will have the imagining exam on Monday and the team hopes to have results Tuesday.
Francona said Floyd has been "feeling some things" in his elbow and the Indians want to make sure he's sound before he pitches again.

Beginning with the 2015 season, the Mariners will field two teams in the Dominican Summer League.
