AI Usage Policy
Updated December 03, 2025.
Our relationship with our readers is built upon a long history of consistent, compelling journalism. We at The Inquirer deeply value the trust our readers have put in us, and know that protecting that trust is paramount in all that we do.
We understand that misuse of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies could damage the trust of our readers and devalue the work of our staff. We’re sharing these principles that guide Inquirer AI use to explain our approach and our intended uses for the technology.
A.I. is a tool that can enhance and expand our journalism.
We view AI as a tool that can improve the depth, breadth and impact of our journalism. AI tools can expand our capacity, enable us to monitor more stories in more places, reach more people, and reduce repetitive tasks so journalists can focus on higher-impact work.
The core work our journalists do — reporting, storytelling, contextualizing, connecting with communities — is irreplaceable.
We are accountable for our journalism.
AI may assist with certain tasks, but every published piece of Inquirer journalism remains under human editorial control. We are responsible for what we report, regardless of the tools used in its creation.
When we use AI to support our work, we will do so with systems designed and overseen by journalists. Any stories we publish with AI support will be edited and vetted by human journalists, and is subject to the same standards we hold all of our journalism to.
We publish content from other news organizations. We expect those organizations to adhere to generative AI principles that are compatible with ours and periodically review their policies and practice to ensure that is the case.
We are transparent and will disclose the use of AI in our journalism.
We’re also clear with our audience when AI plays a significant role in what they see. If AI tools meaningfully shape reporting or storytelling, or are used in a substantial way to create a news product, we will say so and explain how.
We never use AI to alter news photography or video. When we publish photography from third parties, we check the source and use tools and photo editor judgment to validate authenticity. We will always disclose any known use of AI in illustration, photo-illustration or other visuals.
