TORONTO - In a matchup between the top two teams in the AHL's Eastern Conference, the Toronto Marlies beat the Phantoms, 4-2, last night in an AHL game at the Ricoh Coliseum.
The Marlies (14-4-3) scored a goal in each period on shots by Kris Newbury, Ben Ondrus and Derrick Walser to take a 3-0 lead.
The Phantoms (16-6-1) trimmed the lead to 3-1 on Boyd Kane's power-play goal at 13 minutes, 28 seconds of the third period. Jared Ross scored on a penalty shot at 16:14 to make it a one-goal game, but Ondrus scored his second goal on empty-netter to ice it with 46 seconds left.
Phantoms goalie Scott Munroe made 25 saves while Toronto's Justin Pogge made 15. Philadelphia did not manage a shot on goal in the first period.
The Phantoms will return to the Wachovia Spectrum Friday to host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m.
