RAYS 5, YANKEES 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Music blared in the Tampa Bay clubhouse and four large, flat-screen televisions mounted around a column in the middle of the room were tuned to the same in-house channel displaying the American League East standings.

The surprising Rays are on top, and the sputtering Yankees are on the bottom. No one was gloating, though.

"I want us to celebrate hard for 30 minutes postgame and then move on. I want us to dwell on a loss for no more than 30 minutes," manager Joe Maddon said after yesterday's 5-2 victory dumped New York into the cellar.

Scott Kazmir shined in his first start since agreeing to a $28.5 million contract extension, and Akinori Iwamura and Shawn Riggans homered off Ian Kennedy to help Tampa Bay win for the seventh time in eight games.

Kazmir (2-1) allowed three singles in six scoreless innings, even though he is still trying to regain his form after spending April on the disabled list with a left-elbow strain sustained in spring training.

"I'll take it," said Kazmir, who also gave up three hits in six scoreless innings in his previous start, against the Los Angeles Angels.

Iwamura hit the third leadoff homer of his career in the first inning, and Riggans added a two-run shot off Kennedy that made it 4-0 in the fourth.

Troy Percival pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 12 opportunities.

INDIANS 4, ATHLETICS 2

CLEVELAND - An unearned run against Aaron Laffey caused by his own throwing error ended the scoreless streak by Cleveland starters at 441/3 innings but didn't interrupt their string of dominant outings.

Laffey pitched the Indians to victory over Oakland, completing a three-game sweep and giving the surging Indians eight victories in 10 games.

Laffey (2-2) allowed just the unearned run and five hits in seven innings, struck out six, and walked one.

ROYALS 8, TIGERS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jose Guillen homered and drove in three runs, Gil Meche pitched seven solid innings, and Kansas City beat Detroit to complete another three-game sweep of the Tigers.

Kansas City won its season-best fourth straight and improved to 6-0 this season against the skidding Tigers, who have lost four in a row and 10 of 12 while falling into last place in the American League Central.

Billy Butler's two-run double keyed a three-run first against Tigers lefthander Kenny Rogers. Miguel Olivo doubled home Butler with the final run of the inning.
