Doug Overton wants to be a head basketball coach. He was thinking it would be for a college team, since for the last 2 years he has been an assistant coach at Saint Joseph's. Now, he is thinking it might be in the NBA, where he played for 11 seasons.

The former La Salle star has accepted an assistant coaching position under Lawrence Frank with the New Jersey Nets.

"I definitely want to be head coach," said Overton, a Big 5 Hall of Famer. "If you had asked me that a week ago, it would have been college. If you ask me that this week, it might be the NBA."

Overton's family (wife Chanel, son Miles, daughter Maya) will maintain their home in the Philadelphia suburbs. Overton will get a place in North Jersey and "make that turnpike swing."

Frank called while Overton was on vacation. Frank was an assistant coach when Overton played for the Nets, one of eight teams he played for in the NBA.

"This is a great opportunity," Overton said. "St. Joe's helped me be prepared for this. Hopefully, I left St. Joe's in a better position."

Overton said he loved everything about coaching in college, but he just got a better opportunity. And he took it. *
