Heisman? Ho-hum. Let's consider what beer is best

The Heisman Trophy gets awarded tomorrow. Among the finalists headed to New York: Florida Gator (and media darling) Tim Tebow, Oklahoma Sooner Sam Bradford, and Texas Longhorn Colt McCoy. Somewhat surprisingly, Texas Tech's Graham Harrell, who's the active career leader in touchdowns with 130 and who led his team to an 11-1 record, was not invited to NYC.

Did Harrell get snubbed? And who do you think will take home the hardware?

For some reason, it almost feels quaint to be discussing the Heisman voting. It's like we should be wearing fedoras, smoking cigars, and debating Mantle vs. Mays next. The Heisman used to seem a lot more important than it does now. It's been devalued as the number of awards and award shows has grown.

Harrell's coach, Mike Leach, said they should just stop giving the Heisman if his QB isn't at least in the conversation. And he's got a point. What? The Downtown Athletic Club couldn't spring for a fourth plane ticket for its little reality TV show?

It will probably be Tebow. I'll find out when I pick up the Sunday paper.

Now that's quaint. I'll find out who won on SportsCenter. Or a blog. Or the radio. Or via smoke signal.

Still, I like the idea of wearing hats that say "scoop" or "press" on them. A little kitsch goes a long way.

I totally agree on the kitsch element. I love the old ways. That's why I do all my Talkin' contributions on a manual Smith-Corona typewriter I've had since 1975.

I also rely heavily on Corona when contributing to Talkin'.

I leave you two alone for just a little bit, and Talkin' turns to beer. What a surprise.

My favorite, for what it's worth, comes from a little brewery out of San Diego called Stone. They make a deliciously rich IPA. I just have to rely on my rule for drinking martinis: One is good, two are better, three are very bad.

Heisman = Tebow. Yawn. Wake me when he starts a game in the National Football League.

Love Stone. A really tasty beer. Also a big fan of the Smuttynose IPA, which is brewed in New Hampshire.

I'm calling for the upset. Smuttynose over Stone, and Bradford (even though he's probably the statistical favorite) over Tebow.

Much better at Talkin' beer than Heisman. Current fave: Sly Fox dry stout at Standard Tap.

When my daughter Cait was about 5, she asked me: "Daddy, if coffee and beer had a fight, who would you want to win?"

Been pondering that ever since.
