4 homers lift Yankees over Rays

NEW YORK - Andy Pettitte and another barrage of home runs at the new Yankee Stadium carried New York to a win that started what figures to be a challenging week.

NEW YORK - Andy Pettitte and another barrage of home runs at the new Yankee Stadium carried New York to a win that started what figures to be a challenging week.

Pettitte recovered from two wild outings, Johnny Damon hit a tiebreaking home run in the sixth inning and the Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-3, last night.

Mark Teixeira, Nick Swisher, and Derek Jeter also homered for the Yankees, who got all their runs on longballs as Andy Sonnanstine allowed a career-high four. Tampa Bay's Gabe Kapler hit his first home run of the season.

There have been 105 homers in 29 games at the $1.5 billion bandbox, a sharp increase from the 160 last season at the original Yankee Stadium. It was the 10th five-homer game at the new ballpark.

Damon broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth with a drive to right off Sonnanstine (4-6), and Jeter chased him with a leadoff drive in the eighth.

Nine of Damon's 12 home runs this season and six of Jeter's eight have come at home.

The Yankees improved the AL's best record to 34-23.

Tigers 5, White Sox 4

White Sox 6, Tigers 1

CHICAGO - Jose Contreras allowed one hit in eight strong innings in his return to the majors, getting his first win in nearly a year as Chicago beat Detroit to earn a split in their day-night doubleheader.

Alexei Ramirez, Scott Podsednik and Jim Thome homered for the White Sox in the second game after Detroit won the opener as Brandon Inge hit a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth.

Contreras (1-5), officially recalled from triple A between games, allowed a two-out double to Clete Thomas in the first and had two stretches of 11 straight batters retired in earning his first win since June 27, 2008. He walked one and struck out three.

Chicago's three homers came off Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman (0-1), who was making his first major-league appearance since June 1, 2008 and was activated from the disabled list between games. Bonderman had surgery June 30 last year to correct a condition that caused a blood clot in his pitching arm.

He lasted four-innings plus, gave up eight hits, and was charged with six runs.

Thome drove out the 551st of his career, a two-run shot in the third.

In the opener, Inge singled home the go-ahead run shortly after an error on Chicago third baseman Josh Fields.

"I was basically just trying not to strike out," Inge said.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Adam Lind homered twice and drove in four runs, and Toronto snapped a nine-game road losing streak, beating Texas.

Lind, who is 18 for 40 his last 10 games, hit two-run shots in the second and fourth innings off Rangers starter Scott Feldman. It was Lind's first multi-homer game of his career.

Casey Janssen (2-2) gave up three runs, six hits, and struck out six in 51/3 innings.

The righthander made his fourth start of the season after missing 2008 with a torn labrum.

Scott Downs got the final out in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his eighth save in nine chances.

Feldman (5-1) lost for the first time in nine starts this season. Feldman, who had won his three previous outings, allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings.

The first-place Rangers, who announced before the game that outfielder Josh Hamilton will undergo surgery today to repair a partial tear in an abdominal muscle and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, lost for only the fourth time in their last 16 home games.

Scott Rolen and Marco Scutaro each had three hits for the Blue Jays, who had not won on the road since beating Oakland on May 10.

Janssen took a four-hit shutout into the sixth before Texas loaded the bases with no outs.

Marlon Byrd had an infield single and Nelson Cruz scored on a wild pitch to bring the Rangers within 4-2.
