Philadelphians Damon Allen and Julian Williams moved a step closer to becoming national champions by winning their respective bouts with ease during yesterday's preliminary rounds of the USA Boxing Championships in Denver.

Allen (125 pounds) won a 5-1 decision over Kansas City's Johnathon Peterson in the male junior division, and Williams (152) decisioned Anthony Campbell, of Covington, Tenn., 11-7, in a senior division bout.

Three others Philly fighters came up short in the junior division.

Donald Smith (106) had his bout against Jesse Holmes, of St. Louis, stopped 1 minute, 16 seconds into the first round. Karran Richardson (154) was stopped by Joseph Bonus at 1:30 of the first, and Joshua Jones (119) suffered a 15-3 decision to Milwaukee's Luis Feliciano. Jones was the lone Philadelphia representative in the morning rounds of the junior male division.

The event runs until Saturday with this year marking the first time all three divisions (juniors, seniors and open) are combined. *
