Philly fighter wins at nationals

In the last bout of the afternoon session at the USA Boxing Nationals in Denver, Lamar Richards became the first fighter from Philadelphia to win a national title.

Richards clinched the 176-pound division of the junior male yesterday, earning a 5-4 decision over Joshua Temple, of St. Louis. Richards was the only Philly native to emerge victorious from finals competition, as Donald Smith (106) lost 4-3 to Chicago's Shawn Simpson. Damon Allen (125) also lost a 13-10 decision to Jose Ramirez, of Avenal, Calif. Miguel Cartagena (106) earned a trip to Saturday's men's open final with a 17-11 result over Michael Benedosso of Fort Collins, Colo.
