More college sports whispers today. There's talk that the NCAA might expand its basketball tournament from 65 teams to 96. (And yet I have a feeling La Salle still wouldn't make the cut.)

I'm a college hoops junkie, and the tournament is my favorite time of year, but is adding additional schools a good idea?

Why not? It's one more game. And there will still be a 97th team bitching that it didn't get in.

Language!

The NCAA, like everybody else these days, is trying to squeeze more money out of the public. That's all this is. From a competitive standpoint, it's a horrible idea. The tournament already is too big, and not just by one team. Things don't really heat up until the second week. Every once in a while you'll have a mid-major squeak through, but it's not enough to have 64 teams, much less 97.

Instead of messing with a good thing, the NCAA should spend its time figuring out how to make a football tournament. That'd be money well spent.

The NCAA does not control college football, not even a little. It lost hold of that monster a while ago. The six BCS conferences have all the power, and they ain't giving it up.

As you're both aware, I'm a shameless glutton. Bad TV, drinks, scandal - the more, the better. Same with hoops. I disagree that the tournament doesn't heat up until the second week. I actually like the opening weekend best because there are a ton of games happening at once, and you never know which underdog will rise up and smite one of the mighty teams with lofty expectations. Add more teams and you get more March Madness. What's not to like?

I've talked myself into this. Expand away, NCAA. You have Page 2's permission.

I've got an idea. Why don't we have a Talkin' tournament week, where we start out with five or six writers and throw one off the island every day and then, Gonz, you e-mail with yourself the last day. Oh, wait, we tried that already?

That sounds awesome. Then Cohen can yell at me for e-mailing with myself, even though he set the whole thing in motion. Sign me up.
