District 1 baseball playoffs get under way today

The PIAA District 1 baseball playoffs begin today, and nine schools from Delaware County will be represented in the Class AAAA, Class AAA and Class A playoffs. All district games will begin at 4 p.m.

The PIAA District 1 baseball playoffs begin today, and nine schools from Delaware County will be represented in the Class AAAA, Class AAA and Class A playoffs. All district games will begin at 4 p.m.

Central League champion Marple Newtown is the highest seeded team from Delaware County, seeded No. 2 in Class AAA. The Tigers will host No. 7 seed Sun Valley, and No. 3 seed Strath Haven, also from the Central League, will host No. 6 seed Upper Merion in today's first-round games. The top seed in Class AAA is Holy Ghost Prep, and the championship game will be played June 2. The PIAA Class AAA state tournament takes the top two teams from District 1.

In Class AAAA, Interboro is the highest seeded team from Delaware County, where the Bucs drew the No. 7 seed from the south. The Bucs will host the No. 10 seed from the north, Central Bucks West. Chichester, (No. 10 seed from the south), Upper Darby (No. 12 seed south), Glen Mills (No. 13 seed south) and Garnet Valley (No. 14 seed south) are the other schools to qualify for today's district playoffs.

Council Rock North is the No. 1 seed from the north, and West Chester Henderson the No. 1 seed from the south. Both teams will receive first-round byes with the championship game on June 3. The top five teams from Class AAAA playoffs will advance to the state tournament.

In Class A, Delco Christian is the No. 4 in the seven-team tournament, hosting No. 5 seed Church Farm School. Christopher Dock is the No. 1 seed and receives a first-round bye. The championship takes place June 2, with the PIAA taking only the district champion to the state playoffs.
