Altidore hurts ankle, listed as day-to-day

U.S. striker Jozy Altidore has sprained an ankle during a training drill and is listed as day-to-day.

Altidore hurt his right ankle during a workout on a shortened field Wednesday in Irene, South Africa, U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe said. Altidore was taken to a hospital for X-rays and was diagnosed with a mild sprain.

"It's nothing more than that," Buethe said Thursday. "He'll undergo a fitness test tomorrow to determine whether he can play Saturday."

The U.S. faces Australia on Saturday in Roodepoort in the final exhibition for both teams ahead of the World Cup. The Americans open against England on June 12.

Onyewu to play. U.S. coach Bob Bradley says defender Oguchi Onyewu will likely see extended time in Saturday's exhibition against Australia.

Onyewu started against the Czech Republic last week, his first game action since tearing his left patellar tendon in the last World Cup qualifier on Oct. 14. He played the second half of Saturday's game against Turkey.

"I think Gooch has made good progress since we started the camp," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said Thursday. "We were cautious then, as far as the way we brought him back for the Turkey match - but I thought he had a good second half. So we will certainly use him more against Australia and try to again assess exactly where that fits in as we make the decisions for a starting 11 vs. England."

Foreign language. U.S. backup goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who plays for Wolverhampton, on why so many Americans seem to prefer to play in the Premier League: "The first choice for anybody to go overseas, I think, is England. They talk a little bit funny, but otherwise, you know, it's the same language."

World Cup warmups. Helped by Bastian Schweinsteiger's two penalty kicks, Germany came from behind to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina, 3-1, in Frankfurt on Thursday.

Carlos Vela and Alberto Medina tallied as Mexico defeated defending world champions Italy, 2-1, in Brussels, Belgium.

Midfielder Jesus Navas scored from 25 yards out in the 85th minute as Sapin edged South Korea 1-0, in Innsbruck, Austria.

In Friday's warmup games: France takes on China on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean; Slovenia hosts New Zealand in Maribor, the hometown of coach Matjaz Kek; and Japan plays the Ivory Coast in Sion, Switzerland.
