Braves win on homer in 11th

PITTSBURGH - Chipper Jones was concerned when he saw Brooks Conrad take to the on-deck circle in the seventh inning.

PITTSBURGH - Chipper Jones was concerned when he saw Brooks Conrad take to the on-deck circle in the seventh inning.

"I was like, 'That's a mistake,' " the 19-year Atlanta Braves veteran said. " 'We need to keep him for later.' "

Conrad came through once again after manager Fredi Gonzalez waited for a bigger stage to insert him into the game. Conrad hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the 11th inning, and Atlanta topped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-2, on Wednesday.

The home run, into a sliver of seats in right-center with pinch-runner Wilkin Ramirez on first and one out, was Conrad's fifth career pinch-hit homer.

"He came up in the perfect spot and did what we all know he can," Jones said.

Eric Hinske also had a solo homer for the Braves, who have won three of four and got a strong outing from rookie Mike Minor in a spot start for Tim Hudson.

Steve Pearce homered for the first time in 20 months and went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for Pittsburgh, which has lost three straight.

Five of Conrad's 11 career home runs have been on pinch hits, including three - two of them grand slams - last season. "It's just so much fun, especially in the pinch-hit role, getting up there with the game on the line and you've got a chance to drive in the winning run for your team," Conrad said.

Before Conrad hit a 1-2 pitch from Jeff Karstens (3-3) for his first home run of the season, he had been hitting only .130 with one extra-base hit this season.

Minor allowed one run in 52/3 innings, Jonny Venters got Pearce to ground into a double play with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning, and George Sherrill (1-0) pitched a perfect 10th for the Braves.

Craig Kimbrel retired the Pirates in order in the 11th for his 14th save.

Hinske, whose .370 batting average in May ranked second in the National League entering the game, gave Atlanta the lead in the sixth with his homer deep to right, his fifth of the season.

Pearce's homer down the left-field line in the seventh off Eric O'Flaherty prevented Minor from getting his first win of the season.

Minor, recalled Tuesday night to start in place of Hudson (stiff back), was making his second start of the season. Minor, the No. 7 overall draft pick in 2009, allowed seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Astros 2, Dodgers 1

HOUSTON - J.R. Towles broke out of an 0-for-32 slump with three hits, including an RBI single with two outs in the ninth that gave Houston a win over Los Angeles.

Brett Wallace doubled off Matt Guerrier (2-3), and after Bill Hall flied out for the second out, Towles lined a drive into center field, scoring Wallace. Mark Melancon (4-1) pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two.

Ted Lilly gave up a home run to Michael Bourn on the first pitch of the game for a 1-0 Houston lead, but held off the Astros after that.

Aneury Rodriguez allowed only one runner until Matt Kemp singled in the fourth inning for the Dodgers' first hit. Rodriguez gave up four hits in six innings.

Brewers 6, Nationals 4

MILWAUKEE - Zack Greinke hit the go-ahead homer and struck out 10 over seven innings to lead Milwaukee past Washington for its sixth straight victory.

Prince Fielder drove in four runs for the Brewers, who are the hottest team in baseball over the last two weeks with 13 wins in 16 games.

They've also been dominant at Miller Park with nine consecutive victories at home - one short of their franchise-best mark set in 1979 - after completing sweeps of Pittsburgh, Colorado and Washington.

Michael Morse hit his third homer in three days for the Nationals, who limped home on a season-worst five-game skid as part of an ugly 1-7 road trip.

Greinke (3-1) struck out at least one batter each inning.

Padres 3, Cardinals 1

SAN DIEGO - Chase Headley doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to end San Diego's five-game losing streak with a win over St. Louis.

Mat Latos (2-6) pitched eight strong innings for the Padres, allowing one run and six hits while striking out seven. It was 1-all in the Padres eighth when Jason Bartlett reached on a two-out infield single, his third hit of the game.

Headley followed with his tiebreaking double and later scored on an infield single by Ryan Ludwick off Chris Carpenter (1-5).

Latos pitched his best game in a troubled season. The young righthander did not walk anyone in winning for the first time in seven decisions at home, dating to last season. He had lost 11 of his last 12 overall.

Carpenter gave up eight hits in a complete game. He struck out six and did not walk a batter - there were no walks in the game.

Mets 7, Cubs 4

CHICAGO - Dillon Gee allowed four runs during a rocky first inning and then retired 16 of his final 18 batters as New York rode a 12-hit attack to squeeze in a rain-shortened win over Chicago

The umpires waited 41 minutes before calling the game with two outs in the top of the seventh.

The Mets scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-4 lead, and thanks to Gee (4-0), stayed in front the rest of the way. They sent 11 batters to the plate that inning and reliever Justin Berg threw 12 straight balls at one point. Two of those three walks came with the bases loaded.

Carlos Beltran had a two-run double that inning and added a leadoff triple in the sixth. Daniel Murphy, hitting fifth, also had two RBIs.

The Mets, whose last grand slam was in August 2009, had seven plate appearances with the bases loaded and went 2-for-4 with two walks and a sacrifice fly.

D'backs 2, Rockies 1

DENVER - Ian Kennedy tossed eight crisp innings, and centerfielder Chris Young robbed Ty Wigginton of a game-tying homer as surging Arizona beat Colorado.

Young drove in the go-ahead run with a bloop single in the sixth inning, then made his key grab in the eighth.

The Diamondbacks have won eight of their last nine to move over .500 for just the second time this season.

Kennedy (6-1) held down the Rockies all night, allowing just seven hits. The lone run he surrendered came on a sacrifice fly by Todd Helton in the fourth.

The crafty righthander was helped out by Young's sensational catch in dead center. Young drifted back on Wigginton's drive and timed his leap to perfection, reaching over the wall and bringing the ball back.

Kennedy pumped his fist as he walked off the mound and Wigginton shook his head in frustration while rounding first base. Young slapped gloves with teammate Justin Upton and high-fived Gerardo Parra as they sauntered into the dugout.

Closer J.J. Putz pitched a flawless ninth, registering a franchise-record 14th straight save to start the season.

Jason Hammel (3-4) was a hard-luck loser, pitching seven strong innings and surrendering two unearned runs.

Shortstop Alfredo Amezaga's error in the sixth proved costly for Hammel, opening the door for both runs.
