Freshman starter Patrick Peterson gave up just one earned run in 72/3 innings for the Owls (16-27, 4-11 Atlantic Ten) and left with a 4-2 lead. But a pair of errors let UMass tie the game in the ninth and the Minutemen (16-16, 9-6) went on to win.
SOFTBALL: Paige Collings hit a two-run home run, but Drexel (21-24, 6-11 Colonial Athletic Association) lost to visiting George Mason (12-38, 6-12), 13-4.
MEN'S GOLF: The final two rounds of the A-10 tournament at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla., were rained out. George Washington was declared the winner.
La Salle (588) finished seventh, St. Joseph's (602) ninth, and Temple (607) 10th.
La Salle's Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) was the top finisher from the Philadelphia teams at seventh place. He shot 71-71-142 (-2).
Alvernia (624) won the Commonwealth Conference golf title by a stroke over Albright on the East Course at the Hershey Country Club. Avery Jones of Albright won the individual championship by 9 shots with 146.
Swarthmore finished second at the Centennial Conference championship at the Blue Ridge Country Club in Harrisburg. The Garnets were just 4 strokes behind champion Franklin and Marshall (931).
Swarthmore's Paul Weston shot a 73 for a three-day total of 225 and a three-way tie for first with F&M's Cameron Warner and McDaniel's Greg Bowman. Warner birdied the playoff hole to take the title.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Top seeded Johns Hopkins swept Swarthmore, 5-0, to claim its sixth consecutive Centennial Conference title.
