Troy Brouwer had a goal and an assist, and the Washington Capitals scored three power-play goals in the second period of a 4-2 win over the host Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 400th career goal into an empty net.

Thomas Vanek snapped a tie with a power-play goal early in the third period, and the host New York Islanders earned their first regulation victory in over a month by beating the New York Rangers, 5-3.

Kyle Palmieri scored at 2 minutes, 37 seconds of overtime, and the visiting Anaheim Ducks extended their winning streak to seven with a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Kubina retires

Pavel Kubina, the Czech defenseman who helped the Tampa Bay Lightning win the 2004 Stanley Cup, retired from the NHL. The 35-year-old Kubina had 110 goals and 276 assists in 13 seasons with Tampa Bay, Toronto, Atlanta and the Flyers. He last played in the NHL in 2011-12 with Tampa Bay and the Flyers.

Injury updates

Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan has what the team believes is a form of Rocky Mountain Fever and is responding to medication. Doan has missed the last six games after becoming ill with what had been an unknown illness.

Predators goalie Pekka Rinne's recovery from a hip infection will be at least two weeks slower with doctors recommending Rinne continue limiting his activity. The Predators had hoped Rinne could pick up his rehabilitation Friday.

Charges dropped

Prosecutors said they are dropping a domestic violence case against Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov because they have new information leading them to believe they couldn't win a conviction. Varlamov was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault after his girlfriend told police he knocked her down with a kick, stomped on her chest and dragged her by her hair at their apartment on Oct. 30. - AP
