Daniel Hamilton scored 20 points and defending national champion Connecticut beat South Florida, 69-43, in the first round of the American Athletic Conference tournament in Hartford, Conn.

Hamilton, who won the conference's award as rookie of the year, hit 6 of 8 shots, and was 4 of 5 from three-point range for the sixth-seeded Huskies (18-13), who will face No. 3 seed Cincinnati in the quarterfinals Friday.

Houston 66, Tulane 60 - Jherrod Stiggers made five three-pointers and finished with 23 points as the Cougars beat the Green Wave in the first round.

The 10th-seeded Cougars (13-18) will take on No. 2 seed Tulsa Friday.

East Carolina 81, Central Florida 80 - B.J. Tyson had 19 points, Marshall Guilmette scored 18, and the eighth-seeded Pirates (14-18) outlasted the ninth-seeded Knights (12-18) in overtime.
