The top-seeded Gamecocks (31-2) used a 21-1 run early in the second half to break away from the Lady Tigers for an 81-48 victory Friday night in Columbia, S.C.
With the Gamecocks up by 10 points, Welch got South Carolina's run started, and Kadijah Sessions added five points and two steals. It was South Carolina's sixth straight NCAA tournament opening-game win. A'ja Wilson scored 15 points.
Notre Dame 77, Montana 43 - Jewell Loyd scored 18 points, and the top-seeded Fighting Irish used its size and speed to overwhelm the Lady Griz in South Bend, Ind.
Brianna Turner added 12 points, and Michaela Mabrey, Taya Reimer, and Lindsay Allen added nine points each.
