What I Do

As the leader of the Opinion team, I’m committed to facilitating an inclusive, community-wide conversation about issues facing the city and region.

My Background

I have served as the Managing Editor of the Opinion desk since July 2021.

I rejoined The Inquirer after serving as a staff writer for the newspaper from 1993 to 2001, and my experience has blended the theory and practice of journalism in both classroom and newsroom settings.

Prior to leading the Opinion team, I directed the undergraduate minor in journalism, ethics, and democracy at the University of Notre Dame. I have also taught journalism at six other universities.

I spent a decade at The New York Times during two different stints: I was a reporter for the Metro Desk from 2001 to 2008; from 2014 to 2017, I served as associate editor where I led the newsroom's summer internship program and other early-career initiatives.

I earned my bachelor of arts degree in English and journalism from the University of Delaware, and a master of science in journalism from Columbia University. I have advanced to doctoral candidacy in journalism studies at the University of Maryland.
